When Creativity Meets Code

Some of the excitement around AI comes from a hopeful assumption: if machines handle the administrative grind, humans get more time for creative work. Beautiful idea. But what if AI can do the creative stuff too? David Stillwell, Professor of Computational Social Science at the University of Cambridge, has been digging into this. His research shows something striking - AI is as creative as the average human right now. Almost bang on the 50th percentile. Not better. Not worse. Just… average.

 

That changes the conversation.

 

Stillwell believes the most-likely future involves collaboration. AI as a team member. You say something, it responds, you go back and forth. Or as an idea generator: ask it for fifty concepts, pick the three that spark. Or a sounding board: you pitch an idea, it flags potential pitfalls. His team is even researching AI systems collaborating with each other, assigned different roles or expertise, talking through problems to generate better solutions. It sounds like science fiction. The Waves of Implementation

Organisations embracing AI are already seeing productivity gains. Leanne Allen, Head of AI at AISHE UK, describes this as the first wave: augmenting human capabilities. Summarising documents. Drafting emails. Retrieving information from curated knowledge bases faster than any human could. These aren't flashy use cases, but they're powerful. They free up mental bandwidth. They reduce friction.

 

Then comes the second wave. AI agents bringing greater effectiveness and accuracy alongside efficiency. Fraud detection. Tracking customer behaviour. Analysing medical imagery. The tools get sharper. The applications deepen.

 

As AI effectiveness grows, so do the controls for responsible use. Future waves will see AI transform business models and operating structures, altering the skills needed for today's roles towards value-added work and critical thinking. But here's the catch: replacing mundane tasks with continuous critical thinking isn't sustainable. Cognitive overload is real. Burnout is real. Allen warns that adjusting workloads thoughtfully - balancing automation with human judgment - is essential for long-term success.

 

More Work, Not Less

Given AI's expanding capabilites, a natural worry surfaces: does this mean fewer jobs? Stillwell argues it doesn't have to. There's usually more demand than ability to service that demand. Organisations integrating AI while keeping headcount stable gain efficiency. More clients served. More productivity. More revenue.

 

Take animation. If AI automates certain tasks, it doesn't automatically mean fewer animators. It could mean more animation films get made. Society benefits because there's more art in the world. The pie grows. That's a different narrative than the zero-sum story we often hear.

 

The integration of AI into work may be inevitable. How organisations choose to integrate it is not. It's not just about implementing technological change; it's about ensuring workplaces remain human-centered. Using technology to enhance - not replace - humans.

 

Allen emphasises that technological change necessitates a learning curve. Providing training alongside new technologies is crucial, both to manage risk and to maximise employee capabilites. At AISHE UK, they offer comprehensive learning opportunities: AI for Leaders courses, ethics programmes, bespoke tools to support adoption, plus third-party solutions like Microsoft Copilot. For two years running, their "Summer of AI" initiative has brought colleagues together for expert insights, knowledge-sharing sessions, hackathons. It's about engagement, not imposition.

 

Centering the Right Humans

Human-centered organisations place individuals' needs and well-being at the core of decisions. But Eleanor Drage, Senior Research Fellow in AI Ethics at Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, poses a sharp question: which humans are we centering around?

 

The idea of human-centered design becomes meaningless if it overlooks inequalities within the organisation. AI ethics can't be an afterthought. It has to be woven into the fabric of how tools are built, deployed, and evaluated.

 

Allen stresses that trust is essential for AI to be fully accepted across industries and society. Ethics must play a big part. Organisations need to design, build, and use AI responsibly - aligning with principles like transparency, fairness, accountability, and security. But ethics aren't clear-cut. It's a grey area requiring diversity of thought on what is and isn't okay, plus identification and mitigation of risks, including potential bias and harms.

 

One primary concern: AI perpetuating bias in decision-making, like hiring. AI systems train on data. If that data reflects societal inequalities, the AI can reinforce those biases. Allen notes that AI is only as good as the data it's built upon. Historically biased, incomplete, or unrepresentative datasets likely produce biased results.

 

Some companies propose training AI to debias recruitment by removing information on gender, race, or other protected characteristics. Drage warns this approach rests on a fundamental misunderstanding. Improving diversity isn't about injecting more women or people of colour at the start of the corporate journey. It's about addressing culture and inequalities entrenched within organisations. That work can't be outsourced to AI. It requires tackling equal pay, microaggressions, promotion pathways. It's going to feel difficult. If it doesn't, it probably won't work.

 

That said, Drage sees promise in using AI for job specifications. Pattern recognition can flag language that inadvertently appeals more to certain groups. Let's use AI for that. Thoughtful application matters.

 

What We Do Now

AI is reshaping roles, organisations, industries. How do workers and leaders prepare?

 

For workers, engagement is key. Stay informed about AI developments in your sector. Identify opportunities to upskill or reskill. Use AI tools where possible; get familiar with their capabilities and limitations. Leavell suggests seeing yourself as an agent of change. Right now, everything you do with AI tools feeds back into the model. You are literally building it.

 

Stillwell echoes a popular phrase: doctors won't be replaced by AI, but doctors who use AI will replace those who don't. The tools grow more powerful, yet they still rely on human input and oversight. Your judgment matters. Your context matters.

 

For leaders, Allen advocates a strong governance approach. Align AI with organisational strategy. Address risk elements like ethics and regulatory compliance. Manage technical elements like data and systems. Create environments where employees can experiment with AI tools. Mistakes should be seen as learning opportunities, not failures. That mindset fuels innovation.

 

Stillwell adds that organisations need to incentivise employees to share what worked, so successful practices can scale. In sectors where workers have less agency to experiment, leaders must ensure AI isn't implemented top-down in ways that alienate the very people it's meant to support.

 

Effective integration requires worker involvement. Leavell says time should be spent figuring out what employees want technology to do, so AI improves their work and lives. Drage notes that building employee trust is essential; without buy-in, adoption falters.

 

This integration is cultural change as much as technological change. Frame AI as an enabler, an opportunity, not a threat. Allen's advice is simple but profound.

 

Leavell sums it up: we need more people, more diversity, in the room when discussing AI and the future of work. Workers, not just managers and developers. And we need to talk about it differently - because what people think is possible shapes the decisions we make today.
